The Smart Square frame uses a belt drive system with a fixed gear ratio, so there is no derailleur as on traditional bicycles. To simulate shifting, Square adopts a Virtual Shifting system that allows the gear ratio to be electronically varied.
The Square’s handlebar is equipped with instrumented levers that faithfully replicate the functionality of levers from major brands (Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo). Depending on the selected shifting system, the lever buttons replicate the same action as those on a real bike.
When the rider presses a button, the system virtually modifies the gear ratio, which affects both the virtual speed and the resistance generated by the trainer connected to the Square.
Below is an illustrative overview of the button numbering and layout on the handlebar.
* Buttons P7 and P17 are built into the handlebar.
To activate them, simply apply a light pressure on the corresponding brake lever.
The action associated with each button depends on the selected virtual shifting type.
The table below summarizes the available configurations:
Shimano
- Button 9: Shift to larger chainring
- Button 10: Shift to smaller chainring
- Button 19: Shift to larger cog
- Button 20: Shift to smaller cog
- Buttons 8 and 18: No assigned function
Long press: Repeats the command until the button is released.
Campagnolo
- Button 8: Shift to smaller chainring
- Buttons 9 and 10: Shift to larger chainring (both have the same function)
- Button 18: Shift to smaller cog
- Buttons 19 and 20: Shift to larger cog (both have the same function)
Long press: Repeats the command until the button is released.
SRAM
- Buttons 9 and 10: Shift to larger cog (both have the same function)
- Buttons 19 and 20: Shift to smaller cog (both have the same function)
- Buttons 8 and 18: No assigned function
Simultaneous press of a button on the left and right levers shifts the front chainring.
Long press: Repeats the command until the button is released.
Sequential
- Buttons 9 and 10: Decrease resistance level (both have the same function)
- Buttons 19 and 20: Increase resistance level (both have the same function)
- Buttons 8 and 18: No assigned function
Long press: Repeats the command until the button is released.
